A SURVEY OF 20 JUVENILE JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROVIDES A DESCRIPTION OF EACH AGENCY AND SYSTEM, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SYSTEM, AND THE SYSTEM'S OPERATIONS.
Abstract
OF THE 20 AGENCIES SELECTED, SIX HAD STATEWIDE JURISDICTIONS, 13 SERVED COUNTIES, AND ONE SERVED A CITY. TEN OF THE INFORMATION SYSTEM OPERATED 'ON-LINE' AND TEN WERE 'BATCH' OPERATIONS. BOTH WRITTEN QUESTIONNAIRES AND ON-SITE INTERVIEWS WERE UTILIZED TO GATHER INFORMATION. AMONG THE AGENCIES SURVEYED ARE THOSE OF CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, MARYLAND, PHILADELPHIA COUNTY, ST. LOUIS COUNTY, AND WASHINGTON, D.C. THESE AGENCIES AND THE REMAINDER OF THE TWENTY WERE SELECTED ON THE BASES OF THEIR SIZE, LOCATION, POPULATION DENSITY, MODE OF OPERATION, VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS, AND LEVEL OF JURISDICTION IN AN EFFORT TO COMPILE A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS. THE SURVEY DATA DEAL WITH THE APPLICATIONS TO WHICH EACH SYSTEM IS PUT (I.E., CALENDARING, NAME INDEX, CASE-LOAD MONITORING, TEST EVALUATION AND TREATMENT STRATEGIES, ETC.), THE IMPACT OF THE SYSTEM ON EACH AGENCY'S PERSONNEL AND BUDGETING RESOURCES, AND THE INFORMATION BASE (DATA ELEMENTS AND TRACKING, HISTORY, AND STATISTICS CAPABILITIES). OTHER INFORMATION DEALS WITH DATA ENTRY, DATA MAINTENANCE (AUDTING AND PURGING), AND DATA CONTROL.
