FINAL REPORT ON A PROJECT TO LOCATE, IDENTIFY, AND DEVELOP CRIMINAL CASES AGAINST FENCES IN PINELLAS COUNTY (FL) AS A MEANS OF REDUCING BURGLARY AND STOLEN PROPERTY CASES IN THE COUNTY.
Abstract
A FENCING SUPPRESSION UNIT WAS ORGANIZED IN 1974 AND HAS BEEN CREDITED WITH IDENTIFYING, CHARGING, AND SUCCESSFULLY PROSECUTING 71 KNOWN FENCES. IN ADDITION, A STOREFRONT OPERATION DEVELOPED TO BUY BACK STOLEN PROPERTY AND VIDEOTAPE TRANSACTIONS RESULTED IN THE ARREST OF 128 PERSONS ON 349 CHARGES WITH OVER 60 SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSIONS. EXAMINATION OF COUNTY-WIDE CRIME STATISTICS INDICATE THAT THE NUMBER OF BURGLARIES DECREASED WHILE ARRESTS FOR BURGLARIES INCREASED DURING 1974 AND 1975 WHEN THE UNIT WAS IN OPERATION. BASED ON THESE FIGURES, THE UNIT WAS FOUND TO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY MET STATED OBJECTIVES. SEE ALSO NCJ-38544.
