SURVEY OF THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT AND EXISTING STATUS OF COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS, WITH EXAMPLES OF SOME OF THE MORE SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THIS BOOK PRESENTS A WIDE ARRAY OF TOPICS RELATING TO SERVICES PROVIDED FOR THE OFFENDER BY THE COMMUNITY. IT DESCRIBES NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECTS, DIVERSION PROGRAMS, HALFWAY HOUSES, WORK RELEASE, STUDY RELEASE, DRUG AND ALCOHOL PROGRAMS, AND EX-OFFENDER GROUPS. IN JUVENILE SERVICES, THE BOOK ENCOMPASSES GROUP HOMES, FOSTER HOMES, YOUTH SERVICE BUREAUS, AND VOLUNTEER SERVICES. THE TWO FINAL CHAPTERS DISCUSS FACTORS THAT HAVE PROHIBITED THE FULL GROWTH OF COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS AND PROJECT WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMMING. THROUGHOUT, THE AUTHOR DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS (JAIL, PROBATION, PAROLE, JUVENILE COURT SERVICES) AND COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES THAT MOBILIZE COMMUNITY RESOURCES FOR THE OFFENDER AND PROVIDE TRUE ALTERNATIVES TO PUNISHMENT. A 20 PAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY AND AN INDEX ARE PROVIDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
