CONGRESSIONAL STAFF STUDY DETAILS THE EXTENT OF DRUG ABUSE IN THE NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Abstract
MORE THAN 77 PERCENT OF PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE USED ALCOHOL OR DRUGS. ONE-THIRD OF THE STUDENT BODY HAS EXPERIMENTED WITH MARIJUANA OR OTHER DRUGS. BOARD OF EDUCATION LAW REQUIRES THAT THE NAMES OF STUDENTS WHO ARE ADDICTS BE TURNED OVER TO THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT. IN 1971, THE SCHOOL SYSTEM ESTABLISHED A SCHOOL COUNSELING SERVICE FOR ADDICTS. PROGRAMS SUCH AS THIS AND OTHERS THAT ATTACK THE PROBLEM OF DRUG ADDICTION ARE HELPFUL IN DEALING WITH THIS $3.6 BILLION A YEAR PHENOMENON....BS
