DISCUSSION OF THE HARMFUL EFFECTS THAT POLICE INTERROGATIONS HAVE ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING OF JUVENILES AND ON THE INSTITUTIONAL REHABILITATION PROCESS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR CHANGE.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT THE LACK OF POLICE TRAINING IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES, THE USE OF THE SAME INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES FOR BOTH JUVENILES AND ADULTS, AND THE TENDENCY OF BELGIAN INVESTIGATORS TO ARRIVE WITH ARMED, UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICERS, ON TOP OF POOR POLICE-JUVENILE RELATIONS, CAUSE THESE INTERROGATIONS TO BE VERY TRAUMATIZING EXPERIENCES. A REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF INTERROGATIONS, IMPROVEMENTS IN POLICE-JUVENILE RELATIONS, THE SCHEDULING OF INTERROGATIONS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FILING OF CHARGES, THE UTILIZATION OF UNARMED, PLAIN CLOTHES OFFICERS TO CONDUCT THE INTERROGATION, AND ALLOWING A STAFF MEMBER OF THE INSTITUTION TO BE PRESENT DURING THE INTERROGATION ARE RECOMMENDED AS WAYS TO MINIMIZE THESE EFFECTS. --IN FRENCH...ELW
