THIS SPRINGFIELD-SANGAMON COUNTY (IL) SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT PROGRAM UTILIZED THE OPERATION IDENTIFICATION CONCEPT POPULARIZED IN RESIDENTIAL SECURITY PROGRAMS TO REGISTER CITIZEN BAND - CB - RADIOS.
Abstract
THE DEPARTMENT'S CRIME PREVENTION BUREAU SET UP CB ENGRAVING STANDS AT WEEKEND CB COFFEE BREAKS. IN ADDITION TO HAVING THE DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER AND THE SERIAL NUMBER OF THE RADIO ENGRAVED IN OBVIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE CB, THE UNITS WERE ALSO MARKED WITH THE SAME INFORMATION, UTILIZING AN INVISIBLE ULTRAVIOLET MARKING PEN. OVER 4,000 RADIOS WERE ENGRAVED IN FOUR MONTHS RESULTING IN A 20 PERCENT DECREASE IN THEFTS. IMPROVED POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS RESULTING FROM THIS PROGRAM WERE HELPFUL IN PROMOTING THE GROWTH OF CIVILIAN CB PATROLS, IN WHICH MOBILE CB UNITS ARE USED AS ON-THE-SCENE RELAYS OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT....ELW
