OVERVIEW OF INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS IMPLEMENTED AT THIS U.S. ARMY INSTALLATION SOUTH OF COLORADO SPRINGS (CO) WHICH RESULTED IN A 44 PERCENT REDUCTION IN VIOLENT CRIME AND A 39 PERCENT REDUCTION IN PROPERTY CRIMES IN 1975.
Abstract
COMMUNITY-BASED POLICING AND A NEW STYLE OF POLICE COMMUNITY LIAISON HAVE BEEN THE CORNERSTONES OF THESE INNOVATIONS. OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS HAVE INCLUDED CRIME PREVENTION PATROLS; A MILITARY PROBATION SECTION (WHICH ASSISTS COMMANDERS IN SUPERVISING SOLDIERS RELEASED FROM CONFINEMENT); A POLICE BEHAVIORAL SERVICES SECTION (WHICH PATROLS FAMILY RESIDENCE AREAS IDENTIFYING AND RESPONDING TO DISORDERS IN THE HOME ENVIRONMENT AND MAKING REFERRALS TO SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES); AND A MILITARY POLICE-CONSUMER AFFAIRS TASK FORCE. FORT CARSON LAW ENFORCEMENT LIAISONS HAVE ALSO ESTABLISHED A COMMUNITY LIAISON PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS MILITARY POLICE PERSONS TO WORK CLOSELY WITH LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS.... ELW
