THE MAJOR FINDINGS OF A SURVEY CONDUCTED IN SEPTEMBER 1977 OF ARIZONA'S 69 JAILS ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
AS DEFINED FOR THIS STUDY, A JAIL IS AN AREA OF CONFINEMENT INTENDED FOR ADULTS, WHICH IS UNDER THE THE CONTROL OF A COUNTY SHERIFF OR A CITY POLICE CHIEF. JUVENILE DETENTION CENTERS AND JAILS LOCATED ON MILITARY BASES, INDIAN RESERVATIONS, AND NATIONAL PARKS WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE SURVEY. ARIZONA'S JAILS RANGE IN AGE FROM UNDER 1 YEAR TO OVER 70 YEARS AND IN CAPACITY FROM ONE INMATE TO 600 INMATES. ON SEPTEMBER 30, 1977, ARIZONA JAILS HELD 2,365 INMATES. INFORMATION ON THE JAIL FACILITIES CONCERNS NUMBER OF JAILS, AGE OF JAILS, CAPACITY, AND OVERCROWDING. INMATE DATA INCLUDE DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS, GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION, LEGAL STATUS, AND TYPE OF CUSTODY. STAFFING OF THE JAILS AND RATIO OF INMATES TO EMPLOYEES ARE CONSIDERED. A LISTING OF INMATE AND FACILITY DATA IS PROVIDED FOR EACH OF THE STATE'S 14 COUNTIES. (VA)
