Abstract
THE MANUAL OPENS WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY-BASED CRIME PREVENTION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT. EXAMPLES OF CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED: SELF-PROTECTION AGAINST ASSAULT AND AUTO THEFT, PROPERTY IDENTIFICATION, COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL SECURITY INSPECTION, SOUND ALARM DEVICES, CRIME REPORTING, NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK WATCH, ANONYMOUS REPORTING, AND CRIME PREVENTION IN SCHOOLS. GUIDELINES FOR IMPLEMENTING COMMUNITY-BASED CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED. INCLUDED ARE DISCUSSIONS OF DIRECT INVOLVEMENT BY MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT, CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS WITHIN CITY GOVERNMENT, SELECTION AND PLANNING OF PROGRAMS, DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAM RESOURCES, PROGRAM STAFFING AND STRUCTURE, AND EVALUATION.
