THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INDUSTRIAL SECURITY (ASIS) GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR COLLEGE CURRICULUMS AND FACULTIES, AS WELL AS THE ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION OF SECURITY EDUCATION PRGRAMS, ARE EXAMINED.
Abstract
IN 1972, ASIS PUBLISHED A LIST OF GUIDELINES FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS IN SECURITY AND LOSS PREVENTION IN COMMUNITY AND JUNIOR COLLEGES. IN 1977, THE GUIDELINES FOR 4-YEAR PROGRAMS WERE WRITTEN. THE GUIDELINES WERE INTENDED TO CREATE AWARENESS OF THE NEED FOR SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND TO AID IN THE PLANNING OF SUCH PROGRAMS. THEY PROVIDE MODELS OF COURSE OFFERINGS AND DESCRIPTIONS AND ALSO CONCENTRATE ON THE IDENTIFICATION OF APPROPRIATE LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND STUDENT COMPETENCIES INTENDED TO CREATE STUDENT AWARENESS AND MOTIVATION. FACULTY GUIDELINES STRESS THE VARIETY OF OBVIOUS AND SUBTLE WAYS IN WHICH FACULTY MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENRICHMENT OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND THE GENERAL IMAGE OF THE SECURITY PROGRAM. THERE ARE VERY FEW GRADUATE-LEVEL PROGRAMS IN SECURITY, SO THE FACULTY MUST COME FROM OTHER ACADEMIC BACKGROUNDS. THE PROGRAM IN SECURITY SHOULD NOT BE COMBINED WITH CRIMINAL JUSTICE OR LAW ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMS. THERE SHOULD BE AN ADVISORY COUNCIL TO PLAN COURSES, ORGANIZE FIELD TRAINING PROGRAMS, SECURE FUNDING, AND IMPROVE EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS FOR GRADUATES. THE ASIS GUIDELINES STRESS CONTINUOUS EVALUATION OF STUDENT PROGRESS, FACULTY DEVELOPMENT, AND PROGRAM STATUS. OTHER SUGGESTIONS, AS PRESENTED IN THE ASIS DOCUMENT, ARE PROVIDED. (BAC) ARE PROVIDED.
