SECURITY PROBLEMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ARE IDENTIFIED, AND MEASURES FOR IMPROVING SECURITY IN DORMITORIES, PARKING AREAS, AND ACADEMIC AND SERVICE BUILDINGS ARE SUGGESTED.
Abstract
IN THE DISCUSSION OF SECURITY PROBLEMS, IT IS NOTED THAT THE UNIVERSITY, RATHER THAN TAKE A LONG-RANGE VIEW OF SECURITY, REACTS TO PROBLEMS AS THEY ARISE. SPECIFIC SECURITY PROBLEMS IN THE DORMITORIES AND IN THE ACADEMIC AND SERVICE BUILDINGS ARE NOTED, TOGETHER WITH PROBLEMS RELATED TO TRAFFIC AND PARKING. THE CREATION OF A NEW ORGANIZATION UNDER THE UNIVERSITY'S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY IS RECOMMENDED. THE NEW AGENCY WOULD ANALYZE SECURITY VULNERABILITY ON THE CAMPUS AND MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE PROGRAM AIMED AT THE PHYSICAL PROTECTION OF LIFE AND PROPERTY. SECURITY SYSTEMS IN USE IN THE SCHOOL DORMITORIES AND PARKING AREAS ARE ASSESSED, AND CHANGES ARE SUGGESTED. A SECURITY CHECKLIST FOR ACADEMIC AND SERVICE BUILDINGS IS INCLUDED. SUPPORTING MATERIALS ARE APPENDED. (LKM)
