VICTIM DATA FOR PART I CRIMES IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, BETWEEN APRIL AND DECEMBER, DERIVED FROM A COMPUTER DATA BANK OF REPORTED OFFENSES, ARE ANALYZED.
Abstract
PART I CRIMES INCLUDE, MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, BREAKING AND ENTERING, LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT. PURSESNATCHING DATA WERE ALSO INCLUDED. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PURSESNATCHING AND RAPE, ALL OFFENSES WERE MORE OFTEN PERPETRATED AGAINST MALES THAN FEMALES; 62 PERCENT OF ALL VICTIMS WERE MALES. WHITES REPRESENTED 75 PERCENT OF ALL VICTIMS, BLACKS 24 PERCENT, AND OTHER RACES 1 PERCENT. A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VICTIMIZATION OF BLACKS AND WHITES FOR VIOLENT AND NONVIOLENT OFFENSES WAS FOUND; BLACKS WERE VICTIMS OF MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, AND ALL ASSAULTS AT HIGHER PERCENTAGE RATES THAN WHITES. THE MOST FREQUENTLY VICTIMIZED AGE GROUP IS 25 TO 34 YEARS OLD (30 PERCENT OF ALL VICTIMS). THOSE 15 TO 24 REPRESENTED 24 PERCENT OF ALL VICTIMS. THE ELDERLY (OVER 65) REPRESENTED ONLY 5 PERCENT OF THE VICTIM POPULATION. THOSE IN THE 15 TO 24 AGE GROUP WERE THE MOST FREQUENT VICTIMS OF VIOLENT CRIMES. ALTHOUGH VICTIMIZATION RATES BY AGE CATEGORIES VARY SLIGHTLY BY TYPE OF CRIME, VICTIMIZATION REACHES A PEAK AT THE 25 TO 34 AGE CATEGORY AND DECLINES STEADILY THEREAFTER. FINDINGS ARE GENERALLY CONSISTENT WITH THOSE REPORTED BY NATIONAL VICTIMIZATION STUDIES. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS FOR JACKSONVILLE ARE MADE. EXTENSIVE GRAPHIC AND TABULAR DATA SHOWING CRIME, AGE, SEX, AND RACE BREAKDOWNS ARE ALSO PROVIDED. (JAP)
