DESIGNED AS A STUDENT WORKBOOK FOR A WORKSHOP ON ARREST AND ARRAIGNMENT, THIS MATERIAL UTILIZES ROLES TO HELP PARTICIPANTS AND OBSERVERS EXPERIENCE THE DYNAMICS AND PROCEDURES OF ARREST AND ARRAIGNMENT.
Abstract
THIS WORKBOOK IS ONE IN A SERIES OF FIVE FOR WORKSHOPS INTENDED TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE CAUSES AND SOCIETY'S RESPONSES TO IT. TWENTY-ONE ROLES ARE DEFINED FOR THE ROLE PLAY DESCRIBED. THE DRAMA IS BUILT AROUND THE ARRESTS OF THREE HIGH SCHOOL DEFENDANTS ACCUSED OF SELLING OR DISTRIBUTING MARIJUANA. THE ROLE PLAY EXTENDS FROM ARREST THROUGH ARRAIGNMENT AND PORTRAYS THE ROLE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, COURT PERSONNEL, AND THE PARENTS OF THE DEFENDANTS. THE SITUATION, BACKGROUND, AND CHARACTER OF INVOLVEMENT OF EACH CHARACTER PORTRAYED IS DESCRIBED, BUT SPECIFIC DIALOGUES ARE LEFT FOR THE ACTORS TO IMPROVISE. THOSE IN THE WORKSHOP WITHOUT SPECIFIC ROLES ACT AS COURT OBSERVERS. (RCB)
