DESIGNED AS A STUDENT WORKBOOK FOR TWO WORKSHOPS, THE EXERCISES ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO CONSIDER THEIR RIGHTS IN ARREST SITUATIONS AND PRETRIAL PROCEDURES AND EXPLAINS THE WORKINGS OF THE COURT SYSTEM.
Abstract
THIS IS ONE OF FIVE WORKBOOKS DESIGNED FOR A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS INTENDED TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE CAUSES OF CRIME AND SOCIETY'S RESPONSES TO IT. THE FIRST PERIOD, TO LAST ABOUT 1 HOUR, CONSISTS OF FOUR EXERCISES AND SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS AND REPORTING. IN THE FIRST EXERCISE SCENERIO, THE STUDENT CONFRONTS THE POLICE AND HAD THREE RESPONSE CHOICES TO THE SITUATION DESCRIBED. THE STUDENT IS TO THINK ABOUT THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF PURSUING EACH OF THE THREE CHOICES. A SECOND EXERCISE DESCRIBES THREE CHOICES FOR RESPONSE IN A SITUATION DESCRIBED AS ARREST UNDER FALSE PRETENSES. AGAIN THE STUDENT IS ASKED TO LIST THE PREDICTED CONSEQUENCES OF EACH CHOICE. A THIRD EXERCISE CONSISTS OF MATCHING WORDS ASSOCIATED WITH PRETRIAL PROCESSES WITH DEFINITIONS GIVEN. THE FOURTH EXERCISE IS A QUIZ ABOUT PERSONAL RIGHTS WHEN BEING CONFRONTED BY THE POLICE AND PROCESSED AFTER ARREST. THE SCAVENGER HUNT DESCRIBED IN THE SECOND WORKSHOP MATERIAL IS DESIGNED TO GUIDE STUDENTS THROUGH AN OBSERVATION OF ACTUAL COURT PROCEEDINGS AND ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES. A SECOND SCAVENGER HUNT LEADS STUDENTS INTO THE ARBITRATION PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN A NEIGHBORHOOD DISPUTE. (RCB)
