Abstract
THE PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTION FORMAT COMBINES TRUE-FALSE QUESTIONS, AN ANSWER ON THE SAME PAGE, THEN FILL-IN BLANKS TO REINFORCE THE INFORMATION LEARNED. THE MATERIAL DISCUSSES THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHOPLIFTERS, WHY PEOPLE SHOPLIFT, WAYS RETAIL EMPLOYEES CAN COMBAT SHOPLIFTING LOSSES, METHODS USED BY SHOPLIFTERS, AND COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF SHOPLIFTERS. OHIO LAW ON SHOPLIFTING IS PRESENTED. SALESPERSONS ARE WARNED AGAINST MAKING ACCUSATIONS WHICH COULD PROVE DANGEROUS BY EITHER TRIGGERING PHYSICAL ASSAULT OR LEADING TO A FALSE ARREST. INSTEAD, TECHNIQUES FOR DETAINING THE SHOPLIFTER UNTIL MANAGEMENT OR THE STORE DETECTIVE CAN BE SUMMONED ARE RECOMMENDED. THE STYLE IS SIMPLE AND INFORMAL. SMALL CARTOONS ILLUSTRATE THE MATERIAL.
