Abstract
THE ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE SUBCOMMITTEE, SENATOR STROM THURMOND, INDICATES THAT TESTIMONY BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITTEE THUS FAR REVEALS THAT RECENT LEGISLATION ON INTELLIGENCE GATHERING HAS SERIOUSLY UNDERMINED AND PARALYZED ESSENTIAL LAW ENFORCEMENT INTELLIGENCE WORK. THE WITNESS AT THE OCTOBER 5 HEARING WAS ROBERT E. CHASEN, COMMISSIONER OF CUSTOMS, WHO TESTIFIED ON THE DIFFICULTIES IMPOSED ON THE INTELLIGENCE WORK OF THE CUSTOMS SERVICE BY RECENT FEDERAL LEGISLATION. ON OCTOBER 20, JAMES M. H. GREGG, ACTING ADMINISTRATOR OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSISTANCE ADMINISTRATION, TESTIFIED ON HIS AGENCY'S SUPPORT OF IMPROVED INTELLIGENCE SYSTEMS FOR LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
