RECIDIVISM RATES OVER A 3-YEAR PERIOD ARE COMPARED FOR YOUTHS RECEIVING SPECIALIZED AND CONVENTIONAL PROBATION SERVICES IN UTAH COUNTY (PROVO), UTAH.
Abstract
STUDY SUBJECTS WERE 136 JUVENILES WHO WERE UNDER CONVENTIONAL PROBATION SUPERVISION FROM JULY 1, 1969, TO JUNE 30, 1972, AND AN EQUAL NUMBER OF YOUTHS WHO WERE UNDER COMMUNITY PROBATION SUPERVISION FROM JULY 1, 1972, THROUGH JUNE 30, 1975. COMMUNITY PROBATION SUPERVISION INVOLVES THE SEPARATION OF INTAKE AND SUPERVISION FUNCTIONS TO PERMIT PROBATION OFFICERS TO CONCENTRATE ON THE LATTER. THE NUMBER AND NUMBER PER MONTH OF FELONY, MISDEMEANOR, CRIMINAL, AND STATUS OFFENSES ARE COMPARED BY TYPE OF SUPERVISION AND BY SEX AND AGE OF SUBJECTS. THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN RECIDIVISM BETWEEN THE TWO TYPES OF SUPERVISION. MALES COMMITTED MORE OFFENSES AND MORE OFFENSES PER MONTH THAN DID FEMALES FOR ALL OFFENSE CATEGORIES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF STATUS OFFENSES PER MONTH. YOUNGER (14-15 YEAR OLD) SUBJECTS COMMITTED MORE STATUS OFFENSES THAN OLDER (16-17 YEARS OLD) SUBJECTS. YOUNGER SUBJECTS UNDER CONVENTIONAL SUPERVISION COMMITTED MORE STATUS OFFENSES AND MORE STATUS OFFENSES PER MONTH THAN YOUNGER SUBJECTS UNDER COMMUNITY SUPERVISION. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, ALTHOUGH THE COMMUNITY APPROACH WAS NOT MORE EFFECTIVE THAN THE CONVENTIONAL APPROACH IN REDUCING RECIDIVISM, SEVERAL ADVANTAGES OFFERED BY COMMUNITY PROBATION SUPERVISION JUSTIFY ITS CONTINUATION. SUPPORTING DATA AND A LIST OF REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
