THE COURSE MATERIAL RESPONDS TO THE NEED FOR THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER TO HAVE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE COMMUNICATION BARRIER BETWEEN THE OFFICER AND MEMBERS OF THE SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITY. THE COURSE IS MADE UP OF PROGRAM LEARNING UNITS, BUT EACH SEGMENT IS AUTONOMOUS SO THAT THE SPECIAL VOCABULARY OF A PARTICULAR PHASE OF POLICE WORK CAN BE LOCATED. EACH OF THE SEVEN LESSONS CONCENTRATES ON SPECIFIC FEATURES OF GRAMMAR AND POLICE-ORIENTED VOCABULARY. TOPICS SUCH AS BEAT ACTIVITIES, TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS, ACCIDENTS, INTERVIEWS WITH HOLDUP VICTIMS, ARRESTS, AND ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE CONSIDERED. VOCABUALRY LISTS FOR SPECIAL TOPICS ARE INTERSPERSED THROUGHOUT THE BOOK, AND AN APPENDIX IS PROVIDED ON THE SPANISH VERB SYSTEM. THE SOUND SYSTEM AND THE ALPHABET ARE PRESENTED IN THE INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DAG)
