THIS SIX-PART CASSETTE SERIES ON RAPE FOCUSES ON RAPE REPORTING AND PREVENTION, AND THE PROBLEMS FACING RAPE VICTIMS AND OFFENDERS, AND THEIR TREATMENT.
Abstract
THE IMPRESSIONS OF RAPE VICTIMS ARE PRESENTED IN CANDID INTERVIEWS, UNDERSCORING THE NEED FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT OF RAPE VICTIMS BY HOSPITALS AND SOCIETY IN GENERAL -- INCLUDING THE NEED FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL COUSELING. SEVERAL RAPISTS EXPLAIN HOW THEY FELT BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THEY COMMITTED THEIR CRIMES. IN MANY CASES, THE MEN WERE WHAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED NORMAL, BUT THEY WERE SIMPLY ACTING OUT A SEXUAL FANTASY. PROBLEMS FACED BY WOMEN WHEN REPORTING THEIR RAPE ARE DISCUSSED IN AN EFFORT TO ACCOUNT FOR WHY SO MANY CASES GO UNREPORTED. GENERALLY, THE WOMEN MUST GO TO BOTH THE POLICE AND THE HOSPITAL, AND ARE OFTEN SUBJECTED TO A FULL BATTERY OF QUESTIONS WHICH MAY SERIOUSLY EFFECT THE WOMEN EMOTIONALLY. WHILE VICTIM TREATMENT INVOLVES A MEDICAL EXAMINATION AND AT TIMES PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING, USUALLY MOST OF THE RAPE VICTIMS FELT THAT IT IS THE OFFENDER WHO NEEDS THE HELP. RAPISTS MUST BE TAUGHT HOW TO DEAL WITH THEIR SEXUALITY. THE LACK OF PUBLIC SEX EDUCATION MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR INSTILLING THE SEXUAL DEVIANCY UNDERLYING RAPE. RAPE PREVENTION IS ALSO DISCUSSED AND WOMEN ARE URGED TO VARY THEIR DAILY ROUTINES SO THEY ARE NOT EASY TARGETS. HOWEVER, PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT FORM OF PREVENTION IS EFFECTIVE TREATMENT OF THE POTENTIAL RAPIST. FOR THE INDIVIDUAL TAPES IN THIS SET, SEE NCJ 49612-49617. (BAC)
