THIS STATISTICAL AND NARRATIVE REPORT SHOWS THAT IN 1977 IOWA RESIDENTS REPORTED MORE VIOLENT CRIMES BUT FEWER PROPERTY CRIMES TO LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL. ARRESTS FOLLOWED REPORTING PATTERNS.
Abstract
THE REPORT COVERS RATES FOR BOTH VIOLENT AND PROPERTY CRIMES, PRESENT BREAKDOWNS OF DATA BY CRIME TYPE, BY POPULATION OF AREA, AND BY GEOGRAPHIC SUBDIVISION, AND INCLUDES NARRATIVE COMMENTARY. IT ALSO INCLUDES A TABLE DETAILING ASSAULTS ON LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CRIMES REPORTED TO IOWA POLICE AGENCIES IN 1977 WAS 111,275, DOWN FROM 116,183 IN 1976. VIOLENT CRIME INCREASED 7.9 PERCENT, PROPERTY CRIME DECREASED 5.9 PERCENT. MOST OF THE CRIME (81.7 PERCENT) WAS REPORTED IN URBAN AREAS, 6.3 PERCENT IN SUBURBAN AREAS, AND THE REST IN RURAL AREAS. ARREST FIGURES PARALLELLED CRIME FIGURES, INCREASING FOR VIOLENT CRIME, DECREASING FOR PROPERTY CRIME, AND SHOWING CONCENTRATIONS IN URBAN AREAS. A SPECIAL SECTION EXAMINES JUVENILE CRIMES. THERE WAS ALSO A 9.6 INCREASE IN ASSAULTS ON LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS RESULTING IN INJURY. MOST OF THIS INCREASE OCCURRED IN RURAL AREAS AND SMALL CITIES. TWO OFFICERS WERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. CHARTS ILLUSTRATE TRENDS. A PREFACE DESCRIBES THE DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUES. A LIST OF FIGURES IS PROVIDED. FOR VOLUME 2, SEE NCJ-52802. (GLR)
