TOPICS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE ARE DISCUSSED IN THESE LAW AND CRIME SEGMENTS OF THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA AUDIOCASSETTE AND FILM STRIP SERIES ON LAW AND SOCIETY.
Abstract
PROBLEMS OF THE POLICE AND THE COURTS ARE DESCRIBED, WITH SPECIFIC ISSUES OF DISCUSSION BEING POLICE USE OF DEADLY FORCE IN THE PROTECTION OF LIVES AND PROPERTY AND THE CHANGING VIEWS ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. INTERVIEWS WITH OFFICERS INDICATE THE NECESSITY FOR PROVIDING POLICE WITH THE MEANS OF SELF-PROTECTION. THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENS, IN BALANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF POLICE WORK AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, ARE ANALYZED. PROBLEMS OF CORRECTIONS, INCLUDING INEFFECTIVE REHABILITATION AND POOR PRISON LIFE QUALITY ARE INVESTIGATED. THE REQUIREMENTS FOR AND EFFECTS OF INCARCERATING DANGEROUS CRIMINALS ARE EXAMINED AND COMPARED WITH THE LIKELY BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES ARISING FROM USE OF THE PRISON TO ASSIST OFFENDERS IN INTERRUPTING A CRIMINAL LIFE STYLE. ADDITIONAL PRESENTATIONS CONCERN THE GOALS AND CHALLENGES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND ALTERNATIVES TO PUNISHING OFFENDERS. STUDY GUIDE MATERIALS ARE ALSO PROVIDED. (TWK).
