Abstract
SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY ADMINISTERS THREE PROGRAMS IN THE AREA OF CRIME PREVENTION; THE TEXAS CRIME PREVENTION INSTITUTE (TCPI) HAS OPERATED SINCE 1974 AND THE TWO OTHER PROGRAMS--THE CENTER FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION (CJDP) AND THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION--WERE MODELED UPON IT. TCPI OFFERS BASIC TRAINING COURSES AND ALSO PROVIDES ADVANCED CRIME PREVENTION SCHOOLS SUCH AS CRIMES AGAINST THE ELDERLY, ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN, JUVENILE CRIME PREVENTION, WHITE COLLAR CRIME, ADMINISTRATION, DATA ANALYSIS, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, AND COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION. OVER 3,800 LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING AT TCPI, AND CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS FROM OTHER STATES HAVE REQUESTED AND RECEIVED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FROM TCPI. THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE OF TCPI DISTRIBUTED BROCHURES AND DEVELOPED RADIO AND TELEVISION SPOTS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES FREE OF CHARGE. THE 21 COURSES OFFERED BY CJDP ARE DESIGNED TO HELP BOTH TEACHERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS DEAL MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH DELINQUENT AND PREDELINQUENT YOUTH; E.G., BASIC SCHOOL, DELINQUENCY THEORY AND CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS, COMMUNICATION AND INTERVIEWING SKILLS/CHILD ABUSE, AND ALCOHOL/DRUG ABUSE/ORGANIZED CRIME. THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION USES A LEAA GRANT TO PROVIDE TRAINING TO REPRESENTATIVES FROM COMMUNITY-BASED CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHICH APPLIED FOR, BUT DID NOT RECEIVE, LEAA FUNDING FOR IMPLEMENTING COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION PROJECTS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE LOCALITIES. FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF THE GRANT, 500 CITIZEN REPRESENTATIVES WILL RECEIVE TRAINING AT ONE 20 ONE-WEEK SCHOOLS. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ARE APPENDED. (MLC)
