THIS SERIES OF VIDEO CASSETTE TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR FORENSIC PATHOLOGISTS DETAILS THE ROLE OF THE MEDICAL EXAMINER AND ILLUSTRATES AUTOPSY TECHNIQUES FOR VICTIMS OF A VARIETY OF ACCIDENTAL AND CRIMINAL INJURIES.
Abstract
AIMED AT FIRST- AND SECOND-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS, THE CASSETTES INTRODUCE THE CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER OF NEW YORK CITY, WHO DISCUSSES CAUSES AND INVESTIGATIONS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF DEATH AND THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS AND LAWS APPLYING TO SPECIFIC SITUATIONS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN VICTIMS OF ACCIDENTAL, SUICIDAL, AND HOMICIDAL INJURIES. FORENSIC IDENTIFICATION TECHNIQUES ARE ILLUSTRATED, ALONG WITH TYPICAL AUTOPSY APPROACHES TO VICTIMS OF TRAUMA INJURIES (E.G., GUNSHOT AND STABBING WOUNDS AND INJURIES CAUSED BY VEHICLES, FIRE, AND ELECTROCUTION), ASPHYXIA, NARCOTISM, AND CHILD ABUSE. A SUBSERIES OF FIVE CASSETTES EXAMINES MISLABELED AND UNLABELED DEATH (I.E., DEATHS CAUSED BY UNUSUAL EVENTS, OBJECTS, OR CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE EITHER UNRECOGNIZABLE OR MISDIAGNOSED).
