THE TEACHING OF CRIMINOLOGY IS RECOMMENDED AS A PART OF LAW SCHOOL CURRICULA AND AS A MAJOR SUBJECT FOR COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY DEGREES, ESPECIALLY IN LATIN AMERICA, WHERE FEW SUCH PROGRAMS NOW EXIST.
Abstract
AN OVERVIEW OF CRIMINOLOGY PROGRAMS AT UNIVERSITIES AND LAW SCHOOLS IN THE U.S., CANADA, THE NETHERLANDS, SCANDINAVIA, ITALY (WHERE CRIMINOLOGY AS A SCIENCE WAS BORN), ENGLAND, FRANCE, AND SPAIN POINTS TO DIFFERENT DEGREES OF SUCCESS AND ACCEPTANCE. IN GENERAL, THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITIES OF MOST COUNTRIES HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO THE STUDENTS' ENTHUSIASM FOR THIS INNOVATIVE DISCIPLINE WITH SATISFACTORY PROGRAMS. LATIN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES ARE ESPECIALLY LACKING IN ADEQUATE CURRICULA FOR TEACHING CRIMINOLOGY, CRIMINALISTICS, AND RELATED SUBJECTS, DESPITE INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD BY DISTINGUISHED CRIMINOLOGISTS; THE EMPHASIS THERE IS STILL ON TRADITIONAL SUBJECTS, TAUGHT FROM THEORETICAL AND ABSTRACT VIEWPOINTS, RATHER THAN ON THE PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF SUBJECTS RELEVANT TO THE REALITIES OF TODAY'S WORLD. HOWEVER, COSTA RICA IS THE HEADQUARTERS OF A UNITED NATIONS INSTITUTE WHERE THE IN-DEPTH TEACHING OF CRIMINOLOGY IS COMPLEMENTED BY COURSES ON CRIME PREVENTION AND CONTROL, TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS, HUMAN RIGHTS VERSUS PENAL JUSTICE, AND OTHERS SPECIFICALLY RETAINING TO THE SOCIOCULTURAL CHANGES CURRENTLY OCCURING IN LATIN AMERICA.
