THE MENOMONIE, WIS., POLICE DEPARTMENT'S CRIME PREVENTION PROJECT IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE PROJECT, WHICH IS FUNDED BY THE WISCONSIN COUNCIL ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE, IS AIMED AT REDUCING BURGLARY AND THEFT BY 5 TO 10 PERCENT AND INCREASING CLEARANCE RATES FOR THESE OFFENSES BY 10 TO 15 PERCENT. THERE WERE DELAYS IN APPOINTING THE DEPARTMENT'S CRIME PREVENTION OFFICER, AND DATA FOR MEASURING THE PROJECT'S IMPACT ON TARGETED OFFENSES WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE REFUNDING REPORT. HENCE, THE REPORT FOCUSES ON THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT BY THE DEPARTMENT IN PURSUIT OF ITS CRIME PREVENTION GOALS. THESE INCLUDE AN OPERATION IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM, SECURITY INSPECTIONS FOR BUSINESSES AND RESIDENCES, CRIME PREVENTION SEMINARS AND LECTURES FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND INSERVICE CRIME PREVENTION TRAINING FOR MENOMONIE POLICE OFFICERS. ALL OF THE ACTIVITIES ARE BEING CARRIED OUT AS PLANNED, ALTHOUGH OPERATION IDENTIFICATION IS SOMEWHAT BEHIND SCHEDULE. A TABLE SUMMARIZING THE MAJOR FEATURES OF 11 WISCONSIN CRIME PREVENTION PROJECTS, A CRIME PREVENTION FLIER PREPARED BY THE MENOMONIE POLICE, AND THE REPORT OF A SECURITY SURVEY CONDUCTED FOR ONE MENOMONIE BUSINESS ARE APPENDED.
