TIME MANAGEMENT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ORGANIZATIONS IS EXAMINED, AND PROCEDURES FOR ANALYZING TIME AND FOR EVALUATING TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF TIME MANAGEMENT IS THAT EACH ACTIVITY SHOULD BE RECORDED AS IT OCCURS. THE PURPOSE OF KEEPING A TIME LOG IS TO PROVIDE A BASIS FOR DETERMINING HOW TIME IS USED. FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN ANALYZING THIS LOG ARE: WHETHER SETTING GOALS IMPROVES EFFECTIVENESS, THE NUMBER OF INTERRUPTIONS AND TIME LOST, WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CONTROL INTERRUPTIONS, ANALYSIS OF MEETING TIME AND WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED, WHETHER ACTIVITIES OR RESULTS ARE RECORDED, WHETHER SHORT-RANGE AND LONG-RANGE GOALS ARE ESTABLISHED OR ACCOMPLISHED, AND WAYS TO IMPROVE THE USE OF TIME. DAILY TIME ANALYSIS PROCEDURES ARE SPECIFIED FOR THE CLUTTERED DESK AND THE PROBLEM OF PROSCRASTINATION. PLANNING, THE DELEGATION OF RESPONSIBILITY, SELECTIVITY IN READING, AND THE USE OF FLEXTIME ARE IMPORTANT ASPECT IN THE EVALUATION OF TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. (DEP)
