THIS STUDY EXAMINES WHETHER MALE AND FEMALE JUVENILE PAROLEES CONSIDERED GOOD RISKS CAN ADJUST AS WELL WITH OUT PAROLE SUPERVISION AS UNDER REGULAR PAROLE SUPERVISION.
Abstract
IN ADDITION TO ITS PRINCIPAL FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEGREE OF PAROLE SUPERVISION AND PAROLE OUTCOME, THE STUDY ALSO ASSESSED THE KIND AND AMOUNT OF HELP SOUGHT AND RECEIVED WITHIN THE COMMUNITY CONTEXT BY EXPERIMENTAL (NO SUPERVISION) AND CONTROL (REGULAR SUPERVISION) SUBJECTS. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PAROLEES SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED TO PAROLE SUCCESS AND THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PAROLEES FROM THE TWO MAJOR CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS INVOLVED IN THE STUDY SAMPLE WERE CONSIDERED ALSO. ALL YOUTH AT THE STATE TRAINING SCHOOL FOR JUVENILE-AGED MALES MEETING FIVE CRITERIA AND AT THE MINNESOTA HOME SCHOOL FOR JUVENILE-AGED FEMALES MEETING IDENTICAL CRITERIA WERE ASSIGNED RANDOMLY TO CONTROL AND EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS OVER THE COURSE OF A 10-MONTH PERIOD. THE MALE AND FEMALE CONTROL AND RESIDUAL GROUPS (THE RESIDUAL GROUP CONSISTED OF THOSE FAILING TO MEET THE STUDY CRITERIA) RECEIVED REGULAR PAROLE SUPERVISION, WHILE THE MALE AND FEMALE EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS RECEIVED NO SUPERVISORY CONTACT EXCEPT WHERE LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS DICTATED CONTACT. THE TOTAL SAMPLE INCLUDED 234 SUBJECTS, WITH SUBSAMPLES CONSISTING OF THE FOLLOWING: MALE RESIDUAL, 93; MALE EXPERIMENTAL, 85; MALE CONTROL, 85; FEMALE RESIDUAL, 52; FEMALE EXPERIMENTAL, 35; AND FEMALE CONTROL, 64. INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED WITH SUBJECTS AT THE END OF THE 10-MONTH STUDY PERIOD TO DETERMINE PAROLE OUTCOMES AND OBTAIN DATA RELEVANT TO THE STUDY FOCI. DATA INDICATE THAT DIFFERING DEGREES OF PAROLE SUPERVISION DO NOT HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE PAROLE ADJUSTMENT OF JUVENILE BOYS AND GIRLS. THE CAREER OF THE OFFENDER UP TO THE TIME OF PAROLE PARTICULARLY AS INFLUENCED BY INTERACTION WITH THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, THE CONTEXT WITHIN WHICH THE HELPING WORK IS CONDUCTED, AND THE NATURE OF THE HELPING WORK ITSELF WERE FOUND TO BE MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN THE AMOUNT OF SUPERVISORY CONTACT IN DETERMINING PAROLE OUTCOMES FOR SUBJECTS. TABULAR AND GRAPHIC DATA ARE PROVIDED, ALONG WITH A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE, FORMS USED IN THE CONDUCT OF THE STUDY, AND REFERENCES. (RCB)
