A COMPUTER-MAPPED GEOGRAPHIC INVENTORY OF CRIME-RELATED FACTORS IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE MAP ABSTRACT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION EMPLOYS TWO TYPES OF MAPS, THE CHLOROPLETH (SHADED) MAP AND THE ISOLINE (CONTOUR) MAP. DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM THE 1970 JAIL CENSUS, 1973 FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION CRIME REPORTS, 1972-1974 STATISTICS OF THE BOARD OF PARDONS AND PAROLE, 1973 JUVENILE COURT STATISTICS, AND 1972-1974 STATISTICS OF THE BOARD OF CORRECTIONS. ABSOLUTE DATA WERE PLOTTED ON CHLOROPLETH MAPS, WHILE PERCENTS OF TOTALS WERE ILLUSTRATED ON ISOLINE MAPS. THE PURPOSE OF SHOWING PERCENTS IN THE ISOLINE FORMAT IS TO ALLOW PLANNERS TO RECOGNIZE GEOGRAPHIC TRENDS NOT READILY APPARENT ON CHLOROPLETH MAPS. MAPS CONTAIN STATISTICAL INFORMATION ON CRIME BY COUNTY IN THE STATE, PAROLE AND PROBATION, INMATES OF COUNTY JAILS, INMATES OF STATE FACILITIES, INSTITITIONALIZED PERSONS IN CITY-COUNTY JAILS, AND JUVENILE COURT PROCESSING. ADDITIONAL DATA ON CRIME-RELATED FACTORS BY COUNTY ARE CONTAINED IN AN APPENDIX. (DEP)
