A MODEL CURRICULUM FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS IN JUNIOR AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES, DEVELOPED BY CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATORS DURING A 2-WEEK INSTITUTE, IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE CURRICULUM IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN OVERVIEW OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING, AN EXAMINATION OF THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN PROVIDING CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION, AND A REVIEW OF PREVIOUS CURRICULUM RECOMMENDATIONS. A TABLE COMPARES THE MAJOR FEATURES OF MODEL CURRICULUMS DEVELOPED FOR 2-YEAR PROGRAMS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, SECURITY, AND CORRECTIONS FROM 1968 THROUGH 1976. THE RATIONALE BEHIND THE CURRICULUM GUIDELINES DEVELOPED BY INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS AND THE NEED FOR A SYSTEMIC APPROACH TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION ARE DISCUSSED. THE PROPOSED MODEL CURRICULUM IS DEPICTED DIAGRAMATICALLY, ITS MAJOR FEATURES ARE HIGHLIGHTED, AND DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH COURSE ARE PRESENTED. THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE OF THE CURRICULUM IS ITS CORE COURSE DESIGN. ALL CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDENTS, IN ADDITION TO MEETING GENERAL EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS IN ENGLISH, SCIENCE, HUMANITIES, GOVERNMENT, AND SOCIAL SCIENCE, MUST COMPLETE FOUR CORE COURSES (INTRODUCTIONS TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND CRIMINOLOGY, CONCEPTS OF CRIMINAL LAW AND LEGAL PROCESS, AND SOCIAL VALUES AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS). THEY MAY CHOOSE AMONG FOUR 'PATH OPTIONS' (GENERAL, LAW ENFORCEMENT, CORRECTIONS, SECURITY), EACH OF WHICH INCLUDES AT LEAST ONE REQUIRED COURSE PLUS ELECTIVES. AN ANNOTATED LIST OF JOURNALS, NEWSLETTERS, BULLETINS, AND SELECTED REFERENCES AND PUBLICATIONS IS PROVIDED, TOGETHER WITH A COPY OF THE ACADEMY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCIENCES' ACCREDITATION GUIDELINES FOR POSTSECONDARY CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION PROGRAMS.
