URINARY COCAINE AND BENZOYLECGONINE CONCENTRATION DATA FOR SIX INDIVIDUALS WHO RECEIVED ACUTE ADMINISTRATIONS OF 1.5 MG COCAINE HYDROCHLORIDE VIA NASAL INHALATION ARE REPORTED IN THIS STUDY.
Abstract
THE COCAINE DOSAGE IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THERAPEUTIC USE AND ITS ADMINISTRATION BY NASAL INHALATION IS ONE FREQUENTLY USED BY COCAINE ABUSERS. THE STUDY PROVIDES A MORE EXTENSIVE PROFILE, WITH URINE COLLECTIONS CONTINUING FOR 7 DAYS FOLLOWING ADMINISTRATION OF THE DRUG, THAN ANY PREVIOUS ANALYSIS COMPILED ON HUMAN SUBJECTS. THE PRINCIPAL MEANS OF ANALYSIS WAS THE GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC PROCESS (GLC) NOTED FOR PROVIDING SUPERIOR PRECISION. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON DETERMINING THE DURATION WITH WHICH COCAINE OR ITS METABOLITES MAY BE DETECTED WITH CONFIDENCE. THE ADMINISTRATION OF COCAINE PRODUCED NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE STATUS OF THE SIX SUBJECTS. RESPIRATION, BLOOD PRESSURE, AND PUPIL SIZE REMAINED NORMAL. FEELINGS OF EUPHORIA WERE ABSENT. MAXIMAL URINARY EXCRETION OF UNCHANGED COCAINE OCCURRED WITHIN 2 HOURS OF THE INTRANASAL ABSORPTION AND DIMINISHED RAPIDLY THEREAFTER. EXCRETION OF BENZOYLECGONINE WAS MAXIMAL 4 TO 8 HOURS FOLLOWING ADMINSTRATION AND DIMINISHED SLOWLY OVER A NUMBER OF DAYS. BENZOYLECGONINE CONCENTRATIONS GENERALLY EXCEEDED COCAINE VALUES BY A WIDE MARGIN. COCAINE WAS GENERALLY DETECTED FOR APPROXIMATELY 8 TO 12 HOURS, WHILE BENZOYLECGONINE WAS DETECTED FOR 48 TO 72 HOURS. TABULAR DATA AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (MJW)
