Abstract
A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE OUTLINES PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN JOINTLY BY THE OFFICE'S CRIME PREVENTION UNIT AND THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT ON AGING, INCLUDING TWO SYMPOSIA ON THE LIFE STYLES OF SENIOR CITIZENS. A SECOND REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SAME OFFICE DESCRIBES EFFORTS TO INVOLVE THE SENIOR CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA IN CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES, SUMMARIZES RESEARCH FINDINGS ON THE VICTIMIZATION EXPERIENCES OF ELDERLY CALIFORNIANS, CITES EXAMPLES OF CRIME PREVENTION PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY LOCAL POLICE AGENCIES ON BEHALF OF AND IN COOPERATION WITH SENIOR CITIZENS, AND SUGGESTS FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS FOR THE ELDERLY. THE DIRECTOR OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE DEPARTMENT ON AGING DISCUSSES BRIEFLY THE NEED FOR POLICE TO BE SENSITIVE TO THE PROBLEMS OF THE ELDERLY AND OUTLINES THE OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES OF THE JOINT VENTURE IN CRIME PREVENTION BY HER AGENCY AND THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PASADENA, CALIF., POLICE DEPARTMENT DESCRIBES THE RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF 40 SENIOR CITIZENS OF PASADENA TO DO CRIME PREVENTION WORK. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE TRAINING AND ACTIVITIES OF THE 12 VOLUNTEERS WHO CHOSE TO SERVE AS VICTIM ASSISTANTS, PROVIDING CRISIS INTERVENTION, ADVOCACY, AND REFERRAL SERVICES FOR ELDERLY VICTIMS OF CRIME.
