THE FIFTH IN A SERIES OF ANNUAL REPORTS DEALING WITH FINDINGS FROM THE NATIONAL CRIME SURVEY, THIS PUBLICATION PRESENTS DATA ON SELECTED CRIMES OF VIOLENCE AND THEFT FOR CALENDAR YEAR 1977.
Abstract
THE DATA INCLUDE EVENTS THAT WERE REPORTED TO THE POLICE AND THOSE THAT WERE NOT. THE REPORT SUCCEEDS 'CRIMINAL VICTIMIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES, 1976' (NCJ 49543) PUBLISHED IN 1979. APPROXIMATELY 100 STATISTICAL TABLES, COVERING INFORMATION ON VICTIMS, OFFENDERS, CRIME CHARACTERISTICS, AND OTHER TOPICS, ARE BASED ON A REPRESENTATIVE SURVEY OF SOME 137,000 PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IN INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED TWICE DURING THE COURSE OF THE DATA COLLECTION PERIOD, AT 6-MONTH INTERVALS, THE FOLLOWING CRIMES WERE INVESTIGATED: (1) PERSONAL CRIMES, INCLUDING RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, AND PERSONAL LARCENY; (2) PROPERTY CRIMES, INCLUDING BURGLARY, HOUSEHOLD LARCENY, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT. SELECTED FINDINGS ARE COVERED IN A SPECIAL SECTION, WHICH ALSO MAKES REFERENCE TO CONSISTENCIES IN THE PATTERNS OF VICTIMIZATION SINCE 1973. INFORMATION CONCERNING RATES OF VICTIMIZATION FOR THE HISPANIC POPULATION, NOT COVERERD IN PREVIOUS ANNUAL REPORTS, IS PRESENTED. METHODOLOGICAL APPENDIXES AND A SERIES OF TECHNICAL NOTES ARE APPENDED AS AIDS TO THE INTERPRETATION OF SURVEY RESULTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DAG)
