UTAH'S PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM IS REFLECTED IN THIS 1978 ANNUAL REPORT ON CRIME STATISTICS.
Abstract
THE ANNUAL REPORT IS PART OF A CONTINUING EFFORT TO PROVIDE RELIABLE DATA ON CRIME TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, LEGISLATORS, PLANNERS, EDUCATORS, AND THE MEDIA. THE PURPOSE OF DATA REPORTING IS TO AID IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RATIONAL AND EFFECTIVE CRIME PREVENTION AND CONTROL METHODS. THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED. DATA ON CRIME AND ARREST TOTALS FOR 1978 ARE PROVIDED, ALONG WITH DATA ON TYPES OF CRIME (MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY/THEFT, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT), LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS KILLED OR ASSAULTED, CRIME AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, CRIME RATES BY COUNTY AND BY INDEX OFFENSE, AND ARRESTS BY STATE AGENCY. THE STATISTICS SHOW THAT LARCENY/THEFT WAS THE STATE'S MOST PREDOMINANT CRIME, WITH BURGLARY A DISTANT SECOND, AND THAT THE OVERALL POLICE CLEARANCE RATE FOR ALL CRIME TYPES WAS 25 PERCENT. THE CLEARANCE RATE FOR MURDER WAS 76 PERCENT. (DEP)
