STATISTICAL INFORMATON REGARDING JUVENILE CRIMINAL AND DELINQUENT ACTIVITY IN OREGON DURING 1975 IS PRESENTED; OFFENSES, ARRESTS, AND CLEARANCES ARE INCLUDED IN THE DATA BREAKDOWN.
Abstract
OF THE TOTAL 100,057 ARRESTS FOR ALL OFFENSES REPORTED IN OREGON DURING 1975, 36,237 OR 36.2 PERCENT WERE JUVENILE ARRESTS. THIS NUMBER REPRESENTS A DECREASE IN JUVENILE ARRESTS OF 5.4 PERCENT FROM 1974. WITHIN UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS INDEX CATEGORIES, ARREST PATTERNS FOR ADULTS AND JUVENILES WERE NOT SUBSTANTIALLY DIFFERENT. THE MAJORITY OF ARRESTS OF JUVENILES FOR ROBBERY AND BURGLARY WERE FOR FIRST DEGREE, JUVENILE ARRESTS FOR ASSAULT WERE FOR THIRD DEGREE,JUVENILE ARRESTS FOR LARCENY WERE SECOND DEGREE, AND JUVENILE ARRESTS FOR AUTO THEFT WERE FOR UNAUTHORIZED USE. JUVENILES REPRESENTED 24 PERCENT OF THE ARRESTS FOR DRUG ABUSE, 28 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL FOR MISDEMEANORS, AND 52 PERCENT OF THE FELONY ARRESTS. THE PEAK AGE GROUP FOR PROPERTY CRIMES SUCH AS BURGLARY AND LARCENY WAS 15 TO 18, WHILE VIOLENT CRIMES SUCH AS MURDER, ASSAULT , AND RAPE PEAKED AT THE 18 TO 24-YEAR AGE GROUP. JUVENILE INVOLVEMENT IN THE MORE 'SOPHISTICATED' CRIMES SUCH AS FORGERY, COUNTERFEITING, AND EMBEZZLEMENT WAS CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN ADULT INVOLVEMENT. DRUG ACTIVITY SEEMS TO BE LIMITED TO POSSESSION FOR SMALL AMOUNTS OF MARIHUANA FOR BOTH ADULTS AND JUVENILES. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF JUVENILE REFERRALS TO COUNTY JUVENILE DEPARTMENTS IN 1975 WAS 53,764, AN INCREASE OF 50 PERCENT OVER 1974. OF THIS TOTAL, 41.9 PERCENT WERE FOR CRIMINAL OFFENSES, 33.0 PERCENT WERE STATUS OFFENSES, 14.3 PERCENT WERE TRAFFIC OFFENSES, AND THE REMAINING 10.8 PERCENT WERE DEPENDENCY AND NEGLECT CASES AND SPECIAL PROCEEDINGS. THE NUMBER OF STATUS OFFENSES SHOWED A DECREASE OF 4.8 PERCENT FROM 1974, THE HIGHEST NUMBER BEING RUNAWAY OFFENSES. EXTENSIVE TABULAR STATISTICAL DATA ARE PROVIDED IN THE REPORT.
