THIS BOOK, INTENDED FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND SECURITY PROFESSIONALS, TRACES THE DEVELOPMENT OF SECURITY FROM ITS EMBRYONIC STAGES IN THE SMALL FIRM TO THE FULL-FLEDGED PROTECTION PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE SECURITY NEEDS OF MOST BUSINESSES RANGE FROM THE MOST BASIC SECURITY NEEDS (SUCH AS GOOD LOCKS), THROUGH THE USE OF A WIDE VARIETY OF CONTRACT GUARD SERVICES, AND FINALLY TO AN INHOUSE SECURITY PROGRAM. THE INITIAL STAFFING OF THIS INHOUSE DEPARTMENT IS A CRITICAL STEP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EFFECTIVE PROGRAM. THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES OF THE SECURITY STAFF SHOULD BE CLEARLY ESTABLISHED IN PROCEDURE MANUALS AND OTHER REQUIRED REPORTS. ATTENTION MUST BE PAID TO THE SECURITY USES OF PHOTOGRAPHY, THE FACILITIES PROVIDED THE SECURITY DEPARTMENT, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SECURITY AND OTHER COMPANY DEPARTMENTS. INTERNAL CONTROLS AGAINST CRIME CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH SUCH ACCESS CONTROLS AS LOCKS AND KEYS, PERSONNEL CLEARANCE PROCEDURES SUCH AS POLYGRAPH EXAMINATIONS, AND DOCUMENT CONTROLS SUCH AS FILE CABINETS AND SAFES. OTHER INTERNAL CONTROLS CENTER AROUND THE USE OF FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL TECHNIQUES, EMERGENCY AND DISASTER PLANNING, THEFT AND PILFERAGE CONTROLS, AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION, SAFETY, AND FIRST AID MEASURES. EXTERNAL THREATS AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS CAN BE ADDRESSED THROUGH PERIMETER AND EXTERIOR PROTECTION TECHNIQUES, MEASURES AIMED AT PROVIDING EXECUTIVE PROTECTION IN CASE OF TERRORISM, AND PROGRAMS AIMED AT COMBATING SUCH SPECIAL PROBLEMS AS INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE, AND DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION. AMONG THE ELECTRONIC AIDS WHICH CAN BE USED IN PROVIDING SECURITY ARE CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION, COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS (SUCH AS TWO-WAY RADIOS), ALARMS, AND AUTOMATIC ACCESS CONTROL DEVICES. SPECIAL ATTENTION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS OF SECURITY PROFESSIONALS, AND TO THE RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES WHICH HAVE MARKED THIS FIELD. FINALLY, THE SECURITY PROFESSION MUST WORK WITHIN CHANGING SOCIETAL AND LEGAL CONSTRAINTS. AN INDUSTRIAL SECURITY SURVEY CHECKLIST IS APPENDED, CHARTS, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED. (KCP)
