EVALUATION PROGRAMS INITIATED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) TO ASSESS INTERIOR INTRUSION SENSORS USED IN PHYSICAL SECURITY ARE REVIEWED.
Abstract
THERE ARE THREE GENERAL CLASSES OF INTERIOR INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEMS. BOUNDARY PENETRATION SENSORS ARE DESIGNED TO DETECT PENETRATION OF THE BOUNDARY ENCLOSING THE AREA TO BE PROTECTED. MOTION SENSORS ARE INTENDED TO DETECT THE MOTION OF AN INTRUDER WITHIN THE INTERIOR-PROTECTED AREA. PROXIMITY (HANDS-ON) SENSORS ARE DESIGNED TO PROTECT A METALLIC OBJECT AND PROVIDE AN INDICATION IF ANY PERSON ATTEMPTS TO TOUCH OR ACTUALLY DOES TOUCH THE OBJECT. PERFORMANCE CRITERIA ASSOCIATED WITH SENSORS ARE THE PROBABILITY OF DETECTION, THE FALSE ALARM RATE, AND VULNERABILITY TO DEFEAT. EVALUATION PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY THE DOE CONCERN CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF SENSOR PERFORMANCE WITH REGARD TO PERFORMANCE CRITERIA, AND DEVELOPMENT OF TEST PROCEDURES THAT ARE APPLICABLE TO DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGICAL SENSORS AND THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED AS PART OF PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF TEST PROCEDURES IN WHICH THE HUMAN ELEMENT HAS BEEN REMOVED AS THE MAIN TEST MODALITY. THE DOE HAS FOCUSED ON MOTION SENSORS, INCLUDING MONOSTATIC ULTRASONIC SENSORS, INFRARED SENSORS, MICROWAVE SENSORS, AND AUDIO SENSORS. ELECTRONIC SIMULATORS HAVE BEEN USED TO EVALUATE BOTH INTRUDERS AND INTRUDEES (A MOTOR-DRIVEN MANNEQUIN USED IN TESTS). THEY ARE USEFUL IN DETERMINING DETECTION PATTERN VARIATIONS AS A FUNCTION OF INTRUDER VELOCITY. ANOTHER TECHNIQUE TO EVALUATE ACTIVE SENSORS INVOLVES THE DETERMINATION OF TRANSMITTER AND RECEIVER POWER AND PATTERN MEASUREMENTS. EVALUATION DATA, ILLUSTRATIONS, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (DEP)
