Abstract
MATERIALS FOR THE NEWSPAPER COURSE CONSIST OF A SERIES OF 15 WEEKLY NEWSPAPER ARTICLES. THE STUDY GUIDE IS INTENDED TO INTEGRATE THEMES OF THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLES. AUDIO CASSETTES, RELATED DIRECTLY TO NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AS A SUPPLEMENTARY LEARNING AID. FOR STUDENTS PURSUING THE NEWSPAPER COURSE LARGELY THROUGH INDEPENDENT STUDY, THE STUDY GUIDE SERVES IN SOME WAYS AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR CLASS DISCUSSION. EACH SECTION OF THE STUDY GUIDE BEGINS WITH A LIST OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLES AND APPROPRIATE SUPPLEMENTARY SELECTIONS. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY LEARNING OBJECTIVES, AN OVERVIEW OF MAJOR ISSUES AND CONCEPTS, FACTUAL REVIEW QUESTIONS, DISCUSSION QUESTIONS, AND A LIST OF SUGGESTED READINGS. SPECIFIC TOPICS OF THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ARE WHITE COLLAR CRIME, ORGANIZED CRIME, URBAN CRIME, SEX AND CRIME, RACE AND CRIME, THE PHILOSOPHY OF CRIMINAL LAW, LIMITS OF CRIMINAL LAW (NONVICTIM CRIMES), CIVIL LIBERTIES AND CRIMINAL LAW, POLICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, PRETRIAL DETENTION, PLEA BARGAINING AND SENTENCING, THE PRISON COMMUNITY, AND THE FUTURE OF PUNISHMENT.
