A SYSTEM OF MULTIPLE SITE REAL-TIME TELEVISION SURVEILLANCE FOR LARGE GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS IS NOTED AS A PRACTICAL AND RELATIVELY MAINTENANCE-FREE APPROACH TO PROTECTION FROM INTRUSION.
Abstract
ROVING PATROLS ARE NOT EFFECTIVE FOR CONTINUOUS MULTIPLE-SITE SURVEILLANCE, AND CONVENTIONAL ALARMS DO NOT PROVIDE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO ALLOW A MEANINGFUL RESPONSE. TELEVISION SYSTEMS HAVE POTENTIAL BUT ARE COSTLY AND INFLEXIBLE. THE PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM INVOLVES A SYSTEM BASED ON A FREQUENCY-MODULATED CABLE TELEVISION CONCEPT; IT IS CAPABLE OF PROVIDING SURVEILLANCE FOR MULTIPLE SITES, IS MODULAR IN DESIGN FOR QUICK SETUP, IS FLEXIBLE, AND IS EASILY MAINTAINED. AN ELECTRONIC MOTION DETECTOR IS INCORPORATED FOR EACH SITE UNDER SURVEILLANCE, WITH A VISUAL AND AUDIBLE ALARM TO ALERT THE OBSERVER AT THE CENTRAL CONTROL CONSOLE. THE OBSERVER CAN THEN BRING THE INTRUDED SITE UP ON A LARGE SCREEN MONITOR FOR DETAILED ASSESSMENT. THE SYSTEM IS RELATIVELY ECONOMICAL IN THAT ALL EQUIPMENT IS COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE AND INSTALLATION IS STRAIGHTFORWARD, FOLLOWING USUAL CABLE TELEVISION PRACTICES. CAMERAS FROM SEVERAL MANUFACTURERS WERE SELECTED ACCORDING TO CRITERIA SUCH AS BROAD TEMPERATURE RANGE, SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO GREATER THAN 50 DECIBELS, AND SELF-CONTAINED CAMERA IN A SEALED HOUSING. THE SELECTED COHU MODEL 285OB WAS FIELD TESTED AND MODELS WERE PLACED IN 15 SITES. TRANSMISSION, CONSTRUCTION, AND MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. PHOTOGRAPHS AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DEP)
