A SUMMARY IS PROVIDED OF THE EXCHANGE OF OPINIONS ON DATA PROCESSING APPLICATIONS IN POLICE WORK AT AN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION SYMPOSIUM HELD IN FRANCE FROM JUNE 23-27, 1969.
Abstract
PROVIDED IS THE FOLLOWING LIST OF COUNTRIES IN WHICH POLICE STAFF ADMINISTRATION IS HANDLED BY COMPUTER: AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, CANADA, IVORY COAST, UNITED STATES, FRANCE, ISRAEL, ITALY, LEBANON, NETHERLANDS, SINGAPORE, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, THAILAND, AND YUGOSLAVIA. CENTRALIZATION OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS, AS WELL AS THE RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING OF STAFF, WERE IDENTIFIED AS TWO OF THE GREATEST PROBLEMS IN POLICE COMPUTER APPLICATIONS. SUMMARIES WERE GIVEN OF PRESENTATIONS BY SEVERAL COUNTRIES ON THE DEGREE OF PROGRESS ON COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TO POLICE WORK. APPLICATIONS INCLUDED THE COMPUTERIZATION OF DATA ON VEHICLES AND POPULATION (NETHERLANDS), COMPUTERIZATION OF FINGERPRINTS (FRANCE), AND PROGRAMING OF INFORMATION ON CRIMINAL CASES (UNITED KINGDOM). FURTHER USES WERE COMPUTERIZATION OF INFORMATION ON OFFENSES AND OFFENDERS (ITALY), AND OPERATIONAL DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM FOR STOLEN CARS OR RELATED OBJECTS, STOLEN WEAPONS AND WANTED PERSONS (UNITED STATES), AND PROGRAMING WORK ON DESCRIPTIONS, MODUS OPERANDI, COMPLAINTS, AND UPDATING OF CONVICTIONS (SWEDEN). THE MAGNETIC PASSPORT CARD SYSTEM BEING ADOPTED BY FRANCE FOR BORDER CONTROL PURPOSES WAS DESCRIBED. COMPUTER EQUIPMENT USED BY THE POLICE IN AUSTRIA, ISRAEL, ITALY, NETHERLANDS, UNITED KINGDOM, AND SWEDEN ARE LISTED. COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS PROVIDED COMMENTS ON PROTECTION OF FILES, PRESERVATION OF SECRECY, AND COSTS. (DEG)
