THIS INTERPOL REPORT DESCRIBES THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF THE FLOW OF INTERNATIONAL DRUG TRAFFIC IN 1976, DISCUSSES CHANGES IN THIS FLOW, AND ILLUSTRATES HOW MEMBER COUNTRIES HAVE HELPED ITS INCREASE.
Abstract
THE REPORT DOES NOT GIVE THE TOTAL QUANTITIES OF ILLICIT DRUGS SEIZED DURING 1976. THE TABLES IN THE REPORT WERE DRAWN UP BY INTERPOL FROM REPORTS SUBMITTED BY MEMBER COUNTRIES ON ILLICIT TRAFFIC CASES IN WHICH THERE WAS AN INTERNATIONAL ELEMENT. AFTER FALLING FOR 2 YEARS, THE TOTAL QUANTITY OF OPIUM REPORTED SEIZED WORLDWIDE ROSE WIDELY COUNTERFEITED. MAJOR PAPER CURRENCY SEIZURES IN SEIZED IN THE FAR EAST AND 27 PERCENT IN THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST (PRINCIPALLY IRAN AND PAKISTAN). MORPHINE SEIZURES ALSO ROSE IN 1976 BY 14 PERCENT. THE AMOUNT OF MORPHINE SEIZED IN TABLET FORM INCREASED BY 73 PERCENT. THERE WAS AN EVEN MORE SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN SEIZURES AND PERSONS IMPLICATED ROSE BY 100 PERCENT AND THE TOTAL QUANTITY SEIZED BY OVER 150 PERCENT, PERHAPS BECAUSE OF MORE COUNTRIES REPORTING SEIZURES. MORE HEROIN WAS REPORTED SEIZED IN EUROPE THAN ELSEWHERE, A 125 PERCENT INCREASE OVER 1975. IN THE FAR EAST, THAILAND REPORTED 475 KG SEIZED, THE LARGEST NATIONAL SEIZURE TOTAL. SEIZURES OF COCAINE DOUBLED WITH 95 PERCENT REPORTED BY THE AMERICAN CONTINENT AND A LEVELLING OFF REPORTED IN EUROPE. FOR CANNABIS THE OVERALL QUANTITY SEIZED ROSE BY 27 PERCENT, WITH THE AMERICAN CONTINENT ACHIEVING 77 PERCENT OF THE WORLD SEIZURES. CONSIDERABLE QUANTITIES OF PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES WERE SEIZED AND 154 SEIZURES OF CENTRAL NERVOUS STIMULANTS WERE REPORTED. THE NUMBER OF SEIZURES OF HALLUCINOGEN DROPPED BY 21 PERCENT. THE REPORT DESCRIBES SEVERAL CASES OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN DRUG TRAFFIC CONTROL, DISCUSSES ACTIVITIES OF INTERPOL'S GENERAL SECRETARIAT ON DRUG TRAFFIC DURING 1976, AND LISTS CONFERENCES AND WORKING PARTIES THAT WERE HELD ON PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH THE FIGHT AGAINST INTERNATIONAL ILLICIT DRUG TRAFFIC.
