THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROBATION AND AFTERCARE OFFICER IN SINGAPORE DURING AND AFTER A CLIENT'S TREATMENT IN THE DRUG REHABILITATION CENTER ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
WHILE THE CLIENT IS IN THE DRUG REHABILITATION CENTER, THE PROBATION AND AFTERCARE OFFICER PROVIDES SERVICES AT THREE INTERRELATED STAGES: INTAKE, CUSTODY, AND IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO DISCHARGE. THE AFTERCARE OFFICER INTERVIEWS THE INMATE ON ADMISSION TO FACILITATE THE CLIENT'S ADJUSTMENT TO THE CENTER AND GATHER INFORMATION ON THE INMATE AND HIS FAMILY. THIS INFORMATION IS WRITTEN INTO A SOCIAL REPORT THAT WILL HELP THE OFFICER AND THE TREATMENT STAFF IN DEALING WITH PARTICULAR INMATE PROBLEMS. THE AFTERCARE OFFICER IS PART OF THE TREATMENT TEAM DURING A CLIENT'S STAY AT THE CENTER. THE OFFICER ESTABLISHES A HELPING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CLIENT AND ALSO WORKS WITH THE CLIENT'S FAMILY AND COMMUNITY AGENCIES TO PROVIDE A CONSTRUCTIVE SOCIAL AND HELPING FRAMEWORK FOR THE CLIENT WHEN HE IS RELEASED FROM THE CENTER. PRIOR TO DISCHARGE, THE OFFICER COUNSELS THE CLIENT AND INTENSIFIES THE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. THE OFFICER AND CLIENT DISCUSS LIFE PATTERNS AFTER RELEASE, JOB PREFERENCES, AND LIVING ARRANGEMENTS. AFTER RELEASE, THE OFFICER CONTINUES TO HELP THE CLIENT WITH PROBLEMS OF SOCIAL DYSFUNCTIONING AND WITH ECONOMIC PRESSURES. COMMUNITY RESOURCES ARE COORDINATED FOR THE CLIENT'S BENEFIT. IF THE CLIENT CLEARLY IS NOT COMMITTED TO A REHABILITATIVE EFFORT, THE OFFICER ASSUMES THE ROLE OF AN AUTHORITY FIGURE AND MOTIVATES AND PRESSURES THE CLIENT. SOME SPECIFIC ADVICE FOR AFTERCARE OFFICERS IS PROVIDED. IT COVERS COUNSELING TECHNIQUES, GAINING THE CLIENT'S TRUST, MOTIVATING THE CLIENT, AND FOSTERING MORAL DEVELOPMENT. (RCB)
