The hearings focused on organized crime's use of violence to gain control of businesses, organizations, and geographic areas. Speakers included members of the Kansas City, Mo., police department, a Kansas City businessman, a federal penitentiary inmate, the administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, FBI agents and administrators, and Justice Department officials. Topics addressed included types of organized crime activities, causes and effects of organized crime, FBI investigative efforts and techniques, and the use violence in drug trafficking. Other subject areas included criminals' use of the Freedom of Information requests to identify informants, legislation affecting law enforcement agencies' ability to acquire information about organized crime, and organized crime and violence in the River Quay area of Kansas City.
