Abstract
Law Enforcement Officers, Incorporated, a professional association of law enforcement officers and related personnel in the Orlando, Florida, area, published the booklet in order to make up for a lack of up-to-date information on drug and alcohol abuse. Government agencies, educators, professionals in substance abuse, law enforcement personnel, and others assisted in the preparation of the materials. Discussion begins with a brief history of drug abuse and of the attempts to eliminate it. Drugs of abuse and their effects are described and opium derivatives, methaqualone, tranquilizers, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, marijuana, hashish, alcohol, and inhalants are discussed. Separate chapters provide information on identifying drugs, substances, and user symptoms and a summary table is included. Other chapters review Florida's Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act (State Statute 893) and list telephone numbers for Orlando area information centers, hospitals, ambulance services, alcohol and drug services, law enforcement agencies, and medical emergency rescue services where information and help may be obtained. The last chapter suggests parental approaches for dealing with abusers and defines drug-related terms. A list of the booklet's sponsors is included.
