England's National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO) presents its 1979-80 report.
Abstract
By developing services which complement those covered by the statutory responsibilities of the probation service, NACRO offers a professional contribution to the noncustodial sector of corrections in England. As a national organization, NACRO has worked with a number of agencies to link the penal system to other community systems that provide appropriate resources for offenders; for example, NACRO has developed links with national systems which provide housing and agencies with programs that deal with unemployment. NACRO has organized inservice training for the staff of hostels and similar projects, including day centers. NACRO is encouraging the Home Office to initiate a study of long term training needs for community-based corrections projects. NACRO's work in the education of offenders expanded considerably during 1979-80. The two day centers operated by NACRO have increased their services. One of NACRO's teams has advanced in its efforts to work with a number of local authorities in introducing alternatives to residential care and custody for juvenile offenders. Also, community crime prevention projects have been maintained during the year. In addition, services have been provided to crime victims through NACRO's eforts to provide technical assistance for and cooperative communication between victim support schemes. Furthermore, various research, policy formulation, and public education undertakings have occurred with NACRO's help in 1979-80. The report provides an accounting of NACRO's income and expenditures and lists of advisory committees, charitable trusts and companies that have assisted NACRO, staff members, projects, and NACRO publications.
