Solutions for problems of violence and vandalism in the schools, ranging from lock and key control procedures to school programs to reduce truancy, are presented in this first installment of the 'School Violence Prevention Manual.'
Abstract
Designed in a looseleaf format, the manual provides 28 Technical Assistance Bulletins (TAB's) from the National School Resource Network of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Each bulletin describes in detail how a locality has implemented a program that has prevented or reduced school violence, vandalism, and disruption. Every bulletin is numbered and contains a summary of the solution, a statement of the problem, a more detailed description of the solution and steps for implementing it, possible issues and concerns that might arise, results of the solution, and issues of replication. Required resources, references, contacts, and source documents are included. Program descriptions encompass community schools that offer a comprehensive program of services to the community, a behavior contract that teachers and school staff may use to control or modify a student's behavior, and a program that involves visits by police officers to school classrooms and followup activities conducted by teachers (the Officer Friendly Program).
