This paper reviews some historic ties between crisis intervention and the beginning of suicidology, beginning with the Coconut Grove Club fire in Boston which resulted in the creation of the crisis intervention approach.
Abstract
The paper describes the author's involvement in suicidology and law enforcement in terms of crisis intervention, management of the man with a gun, studies of suicide among police, bereavement of widows of slain police officers, jailer stress, psychological aspects of kidnapping, kidnappers, victim survival in kidnapping, hostage negotiation, and application of the psychological autopsy to homicide investigation. Specific cases are described such as the one involving a group of Detroit elementary school children who had witnessed the shooting of their teacher by her estranged husband. The development of a survivor counseling program is outlined as well as other new areas for application including violence in the industrial setting and in the classroom. Two references are included.
