Using television actor Edward Asner as host and commentator, this film describes the varied causes of child abuse and the help now provided by effective child abuse programs.
Abstract
The film presents actual parents who were child abusers, rather than actors, representing a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. A married couple, a couple now divorced, a single parent, and a married mother are shown in child abuse situations. One of the fathers was unemployed and deeply in debt when he injured his son; another is a well-educated, successful computer executive. The film shows that the parents were often victims of child abuse and that the right combination of pressures and circumstances can cause even good parents to become abusive. The film also makes clear that too many people have fantasies and misconceptions about childraising and are unaware of all the responsibility and effort involved. In addition, programs such as that of Parents Anonymous and the Parental Stress Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., are described. These programs are without cost, protect children, keep families together, and teach parents to function without abusing their children. The film is intended for high school, college, and adult audiences.
