Funding for statewide and major local programs is available through LEAA's National Priority Program in Juror Utilization and Management. In eight States, funding has been provided through State resources and administration. In addition, local funds are available for jury system improvements, especially if there are offsetting cost savings. The Center for Jury Studies has been funded by LEAA to provide technical assistance to States and those courts committed to improving their jury systems. A methodology for evaluating jury system performance has been developed by the center, and information packages of reference materials are currently being compiled. Support facilities such as photocopying machines and telephone answering devices may be available, and training in jury system technology is provided for a limited number of persons. Finally, the center has prepared a listing of those persons felt to be highly knowledgeable in various aspects of joror utilization and management. The list is organized by program elements. These elements include a jury system plan, source lists, qualifications and summoning, exemptions and postponements, orientation, term of service, juror utilization, standard panel sizes, calendar coordination, standby jurors, voir dire, and monitoring and control. Additional subjects include computerization, paperwork techniques, and public relations. For each entry, the name, address, telephone number, and specific area of experience are specified. Some of the individuals are affiliated with courts or corporations, while others are consultants. A bibliography and an appendix containing an alphabetical index and State index of resource persons are provided.
