The types of probationary, parole, and community-based treatment programs connected with the corrections system are identified as the juvenile classification home (probation), the juvenile training school (release on parole and work-release), prison, the voluntary visitor, and the furlough system. Statistics are provided that show distribution of probationers and parolees in juvenile classification homes, juvenile training schools, and prison. Other data show parole application refusal rates and the distribution of parole supervision terms or periods. A brief description of the standards for probation and parole from the juvenile classification home, the juvenile training school, and prison is followed by a discussion of probation and parole problems. Major problems are seen in selection of criteria for probational decisions and the antipathy of the public toward criminal offenders. Recommended proposed countermeasures include (1) The development of better treatment techniques, prediction studies of repeat offenders, and classification studies of criminals; (2) greater public information efforts to lessen public apathy; and (3) expansion of the system of compensation for the victims of crimes.
