This handbook of tribal law has not yet been approved by the tribal business council, and should be considered a strong reflection of tribal court decisions, rather than as tribal law itself. Blackfeet tribal law is based upon the tribe's constitution and bylaws as approved by the United States Secretary of the Interior. The tribal council has the authority to make criminal laws and procedures to protect the peace, tranquility, and dignity of all persons residing on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The council also protects Blackfeet customs and traditions and preserves natural and human resources on the reservation. Explanations of the laws are arranged alphabetically by subject. The subject categories include abandoned icebox responsibility, assault, bigamy, care of communicable disease, fish and game violations, malicious gossip, misbranding, neglecting animals, public drunkenness, unauthorized use of property and many others. Legal processes are also described including sentencing, appeals of tribal court decisions, civil case procedures, adoption, divorce, and probate procedures. Parole and suspension of sentence procedures are explained, juvenile and motor vehicle code provisions are considered, and authorization of tribal land transfer is discussed. (ERIC abstract modified)
